I’m a big fan of the Kamala Khan character. She’s one of the best new characters in the last ten years. Well since they announced the Disney + series I have been awaiting to see how the latest character to debut in the live action MCU was going to be handled and after today’s trailer, I have some questions. Let’s watch, shall we?
Okay I’ve said on our live show I’m a big fan of the casting of Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan and after seeing a sampling of her acting I’m even happier. Understand this is a newcomer to acting and I’m getting a feeling she gets the character. I’m loving these little touches of animation and effects like we’re seeing the world through Kamala’s eyes. But with all these positives I must address the elephant in the room.
If you’re unfamiliar with the character Kamala gained the ability to change her body composition to elongate, shrink, and enlarge her physical structure. She does gain enhanced strength and can even shapeshift. I’m guessing at some point someone said that would be too much to put on screen and honestly, I’m not okay with the change. Instead it looks as though Ms. Marvel will be able to make energy constructs with a band that she discovers. Now this item looks suspiciously like a Nega Band. It’s a powerful item that can make energy constructs not unlike a Lantern Ring in DC Comics. In the comics they originally were given to Mar-Vell and have been wielded by his children as well. So, hey random comic facts for the win once again. This is not enough to push me away from this series but I will admit, it’s not what I wanted.
Set to debut June 8th 2022 on Disney Plus Ms. Marvel will have a six episode run on the streaming platform. Iman Vellani will playing the titular character Ms. Marvel and also starring in the series will be Aramis Knight as Red Dagger/Kareem, Mohan Kapur as Yusuf Khan, Kamala’s father, Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, Kamala’s mother and Saagar Shaikh as Amir Khan, Kamala’s older brother. Matt Lintz will also be in the series as Kamala’s best friend Bruno, who we don’t talk about. And look if Brie Larson isn’t in this I will be sorely disappointed at the missed opportunity to watch Kamala fangirl about it.
