First of all, breathtaking shots. A horror movie this pretty is refreshing. Nell Tiger Free shines as the Margaret, particularly in a long shot in the third act of a horrifying transformation. There were obviously a lot of young women, and every single one of them held their own. Also, Bill Nighy made a surprise appearance, doing a genre he is definitely not known for. And Ralph Ineson remains a steady presence in horror doing a turn as Father Brennan, AKA exposition priest.
The story felt convoluted in the middle, but overall made sense and lined up with what we think? we remember about The Omen: it was a worthy prequel. The two hour runtime is long for horror, and you feel it. Still, it has a lot of story to tell, and the pacing was intentional in its build.
BE WARNED. This movie is full of triggers of all types, and the version we watched did not have a strobing effect warning that definitely should be there. I would also liked to have seen more diversity through the cast, even if just for character differentiation’s sake, given that priests and nuns have an inconvenient uniformity in the way they dress.
Overall an enjoyable ride, telling the tragic tale of the Antichrist bred in captivity.
