So Kas had seen this one and I hadn’t. Midsommar is a weird cult story that makes me wish my people (white vaguely Scottish/Irish people) had more culture and legend (or at least that I knew our mythology better). At least I have mental illnesses and queerness to enrich my perspective (hooray?).
There are a lot of rare horror elements that enrich the storytelling, and it is flawlessly cast and acted. Most of it takes place in Sweden, and the filmmaking used an amazing blend of actual Swedish tradition/mythology and some made up nonsense to weave this creepy, haunting tale.
It’s a little long, and kind of a bummer, but Midsommar manages to be an intimate look at grief, connection, and this bizarre life while not losing that special introspective dread.
Also lots of nudity.
