“V/H/S Beyond” is almost as hard to review as it is to type out.
It’s six pretty disparate stories held together by a loose theme, and each short film attempts its own storytelling style, actors, thematic elements, and perspective.
But it would be far too generous to say each short actually achieves those heights. From a personal standpoint, I can appreciate a tight production budget better than many, if not most, people in my field. But in the case of V/H/S Beyond, it felt like several of the filmmakers weren’t sure what story they wanted to tell.
It also occasionally becomes difficult to ascertain whether the overarching narrative is being presented, or we’ve launched into another short.
Having said all of that, four out of the six are interesting enough to watch. So I’d have to say they succeeded somewhere around 67% of the time.
