The Nice guys is one of those movies about which people lament: “They just don’t make em like they used to.”
But movies like this one have always been rare. Clever jokes, engaging plot points, stylish sets, charismatic actors, on-point directing, and a believable story – it’s always been a compelling combination. But it’s just not that easy to pull off.
The Nice Guys is a gem. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are an amazing duo, entirely natural in roles they seem born to play: Crowe as the seasoned professional, Gisling as the…well, fuck up – albeit with moments of insight and intuitions. And Angourie Rice shines as Gosling’s preteen daughter, both the motivation and the mechanism by which Gosling is holding his life together – by a thread.
If that wasn’t a good enough setup, the supporting cast is unbelievable. Keith David, Matt Bomer, and (a personal favorite from another era) Yaya DaCosta are just a few names that round out the cast.
But what truly makes The Nice Guys great is a simple, expertly told buddy cop story, and the tired “dame” storyline cleverly swapped out for a dad, doing his (almost) best for his daughter.
Overall, a truly exciting and enjoyable ride that’s way funnier than most movies of its kind. Just watch it. It’s actually laugh out loud funny.
