Immaculate was one of the creepiest so far. The movie successfully balanced a lot of unsettling elements while intentionally refusing to prove something was definitely wrong.
Her not knowing the language, the dreary settling, the one girl that didn’t like her for no reason: you know something is wrong with this place, but not what specifically.
I enjoyed the feeling of not truly understanding what was happening to her. I didn’t know why many of the things happened, and felt the suspense build. Who’s a good guy? Who’s a bad guy? It wasn’t in a hurry to tell you, and I enjoyed the delay.
The story is a creepy one, well told, well paced, well shown.
I also appreciated that there are elements they hint at without being truly explicit. There’s hints of eugenics, there’s hints of forced birth, there’s most definitely religious abuse. But for the most part, they don’t go “whole hog” with any relevant political message.
I liked Immaculate. It’s well made, and avoids most of the super predictable tropes of its kind.
